Weather and vandal resistant, theft-proof and requiring no mains power, the Solar Audio Posts and U-Turn Round are a step-up from traditional signage, providing a simple but engaging audio experience to entertain and educate visitors at any time of the year. Formed in 2009 through a merging of museums, the East Funen Museums total a huge 8 public visitor sites across both Nyborg and Kerteminde in Denmark.

In a bid to bring outdoor interpretation to various locations across their sites, our outdoor audio hardware was utilised, offering audio information to visitors in both Danish and English. One such example is the U-Turn Round.

This rotary powered eco-friendly unit is capable of holding up to 8 tracks and encourages visitors to turn the handle in order to hear audio of market life in the 1920s. This has the benefit of being completely wind-up powered and suitable for installation in any location without the need for power, but also provides a more memorable learning experience than other less interactive options.

East Funen Museums ordered their U-Turn Rounds with custom lasered batwings – designed by VisitNyborg. Typically these provide instructions or artwork but in this case they also included QR codes, so smartphone users can be directed to further information.

The inclusion of scannable QR codes for more information can also be found engraved onto the metal face plates of our Solar Audio Posts – another of our outdoor audio devices supplied for the project. With two activation buttons able to share up to 6 audio stories about medieval knight tournaments, the Solar Audio Posts are (you guessed it) powered completely by solar energy. A more relaxed option for providing outdoor audio, you’ll find them installed at nearby benches where visitors can rest and enjoy the audio.

In less than two months these devices have been a proven success, with the audio tracks being played a total of 7.300 times (measurable thanks to it’s built-in statistics functionality).
