Single Cup Headphones and SoundClip-8’s – Derby Museum & Art Gallery
“The Single Cup Headphone is ideal for listening to the oral histories in the exhibition, the process of holding the cup to one’s ear seems to enhance the intimacy of the experience for the listener. The products from Blackbox-av seemed the ideal method of presenting a range of oral histories on various relevant subjects, where the viewer is able to navigate the recordings without having to listen through all of them in a prescribed order.”

A number of our off-the-shelf audio interpretation products were utilised in a new exhibition recently, as Richard Tailby, Display and Interpretation Technician at the Museum goes into detail about below;
“The new exhibition charts the history of the Derby West Indian Community Association, and is supported by many objects/artefacts from Derby’s West Indian community. The products from Blackbox-av seemed the ideal method of presenting a range of oral histories on various relevant subjects, where the viewer is able to navigate the recordings without having to listen through all of them in a prescribed order.”
“Each ‘station’ houses a SoundClip-8 unit, transformer, buttons and Single Cup Headphone. I designed something that would be easy to mount on the wall and was a single unit. To relate the experience of listening to the recordings to the experience of those speaking, we embedded two of the units into the personal items belonging to the speaker, one a record player, the other a small suitcase.”
“The Single Cup Headphone is ideal for listening to the oral histories in the exhibition, the process of holding the cup to one’s ear seems to enhance the intimacy of the experience for the listener. Having struggled in the past to adequately house conventional headphones, the magnetic solution for the Single Cup Headphones are very easy for us to install and maintain, with no loose wires.”
“We opted to send Blackbox-av our audio files to be installed on each SoundClip – a total of 48 recordings – as it allowed us time to do other things. Everything was correctly uploaded and sequenced, meaning the units were effectively ready to go when they arrived. Many thanks for your help with this project, and I have no doubt, when the need next arises, I will be coming back to you for a solution.”
