Kiosks with Lightbox 3 – Durham University
This project is a great example of our off-the-shelf software in action. Interactives are developed and updated on-site by the staff and students using the simple to navigate content management system.
Comprised of 17 colleges, Durham University is one of the top 100 Universities in the world. Their three core values are world-leading research, education and the student experience.
A selection of our touchscreen Freestanding Kiosks (paired with Heavy Duty Handsets and running our Lightbox 3 Software) have been installed across Durham University’s many venues. One such Kiosk can be found within the reception of the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre.
This kiosk contains informative galleries on subjects such as “Historic Durham” and “Durham Views: Past and Present”. It also includes an introduction to Bishop Cosin’s Library and shares a World Heritage Site Map.
Over at the Palatine Centre which houses key student services, the University’s headquarters and Durham Law School, you’ll find a new art collection and another kiosk – this one is regularly updated with information on Durham University’s annual Student Art Prize.
In another location is the Oriental Museum which houses a huge range of artworks and archaeological artefacts from the great cultures of northern Africa and Asia. More than 36,000 objects are housed here in the museum’s galleries and stores.
The first touchscreen here displays videos about Islam, Christianity and Judaism, developed with the help of local faith communities.
While a second touchscreen at the Oriental Museum contains introductions of multiple art works and interviews with the many artists that made items viewable in the surrounding displays.
In the Museum of Archaeology, the main gallery has a kiosk that helps to tell the full story of County Durham’s Bronze Age history.
It includes a timeline of the Bronze age as well as multiple galleries on daily life, weapons, warfare, landscape, metalworking, trade, beliefs and more. This also contains information on different excavations and student exhibitions that the Museum hosts.
Meanwhile a kiosk located in the World Heritage Area hosts a Conservation Gallery. This allows the Museum of Archaeology to provide information on remarkable projects like “Saving Durham Castle” and to show the conservation of precious books and archives from Palace Green Library, without the worry of degradation in public displays.
This project is a great example of our off-the-shelf software ‘Lightbox 3’ in action. Interactives are developed and updated on-site by the staff and students using the simple to navigate content management system.
Coupled with our free-standing kiosks the museum and Durham University are able to display a myriad of historical multi-media through richly designed touchscreen interactives that are easily revised as and when required.
