Heavy Duty Bench – The Lancaster LM167 & LL802 Memorial
The memorial consists of brick base and bronze plaque listing the names of the aircrew lost that day, it also includes our Heavy Duty Audio Bench which allows visitors a chance to sit and hear the story of what happened here in 1944.
On the 20th September 1944 due to poor weather conditions two RAF Lancaster bombers tragically collided mid-air while enroute to a mission in France. Both aircraft crashed to the ground and 15 lives were lost. Through the years the knowledge of this accident, its location, and the death of the aircrew has been gradually lost to memory – just a few of the many thousands killed in Bomber Command during the war.
Earls Colne Heritage Museum would however make the fortuitous discovery of a newspaper article concerning the tragic event, and through extensive research managed to identify the precise location of the crash in the local area.
The Heritage Museum wished to honour the lives lost during this tragic event and keep their memories alive, they therefore made plans to install a memorial close to where the crash took place.
The memorial consists of brick base and bronze plaque listing the names of the aircrew lost that day, it also includes our Heavy Duty Audio Bench which allows visitors a chance to sit and hear the story of what happened here in 1944.
The durability and solar powered nature of the bench enables its installation anywhere without the need for mains power. This allowed it to be easily installed alongside the memorial and helps ensure that while they may be gone, the men who lost their lives that day are not yet forgotten.
