Conservation Centre – Trentham Monkey Forest
Home to over 140 Barbary macaques all of which are free to roam as they would in the wild, Trentham Monkey Forest offers a unique up-close experience in Stoke-on-Trent for the whole family, while also raising awareness of this endangered species and the park’s efforts to protect them.
As you journey along a half-mile trail you can learn more about these amazing monkeys at the Conservation Centre – housing our latest contribution to the park.
Within this large shelter you’ll find three walls of interpretation representing the Past, Present and Future of the Barbary macaques’ 300,000 year history (and beyond) as well as Monkey Forests previous and continued conservation efforts.
On the Past Wall you’ll find a bespoke video unit consisting of a 32″ Outdoor Screen and our solid state video player the VideoClip HD, letting visitors access 8 videos that offer an insight into the history of Trentham Monkey Forest since 2005.
Alongside the button activated video unit sits a spinning information wheel charting the sadly declining population of Barbary macaques across the decades.
On the Present Wall you’ll find out about Monkey Forest’s current global endeavours as well as fun facts on the Barbary macaques they’re protecting. Our wind-up powered AudioSign Turn allows access to a number of monkey calls with the nearby lift-up flaps revealing more information about what visitors are hearing.
The Future Wall covers the current and (possible) future plight of Barbary macaques. Bespoke scales and moulds of a monkeys hand and foot allows visitors to compare with the scales providing an idea of which primate you are closest to in weight. A unique peephole diorama presents visitors with a stark view of the future, displaying a habitat with very few Barbary monkeys.
