Solar Audio Bench – Cranfield University
Putting these recordings in benches gives people something to ponder while they relax, which hopefully adds to their experience. At the moment the focus is on soils, but in the future I hope different research groups can showcase their work using the benches.

Dr Dan Evans, Lecturer in Soil Formation at Cranfield University, was tasked with the installation of a set of outdoor audio points aimed at giving users a chance to learn about what’s under their feet.
The Audio Bench Traditional was the obvious choice with a plan to move the benches around in order to enhance a variety of environments. The audio bench is weatherproof and powered entirely from integrated solar panels, making it self-sustaining and ideal for this project.
The Audio Bench is also easily updated so the audio track(s) can be changed when required which coupled with the dynamic QR code engraved on the front panel (which will link to further information and videos for the currently chosen subject) makes them incredibly flexible going forwards.
“Putting these recordings in benches gives people something to ponder while they relax, which hopefully adds to their experience,” says Dr Evans. “At the moment the focus is on soils, but in the future I hope different research groups can showcase their work using the benches.”
