U-Turn Round – Pukeiti Rainforest
This is our second U-Turn Round audio player at Pukeiti. We purchased the first one in 2016 to give the public tips about growing rhododendrons and it’s still going strong with no maintenance or issues at all.

‘Piwakawaka Family Hut’ is a treetop lodge found in the heart of the Pukeiti, a beautiful rhododendron garden set in 360 hectares of native rainforest in Taranaki, New Zealand. Accommodating up to 12 people, the hut is designed to offer a unique camping experience. You get amazing views, solar powered lights and a roof over your head – but no electricity and very limited cell phone coverage.
Visitors can take in the beauty of Pukeiti and the wildlife it plays host to, of which you can learn a little more about thanks to an audio point located on the hut’s deck. Combining a large colourful graphics panel and one of our U-Turn Rounds, Lara Coxhead, Projects and Programmes Coordinator at Taranaki Regional Council, elaborates further;
Thank you so much to Blackbox-AV for supplying this wonderful device to us on the other side of the world. This new one is out in the rainforest so the public can learn to pronounce the birds’ Te Reo Māori names correctly and identify their calls.
Being completely self powered and designed to withstand the elements, the U-Turn Round is a unique device that is perfect for just such an application. Paired with the vibrant graphics panel the audio installation looks fantastic and is a great way to teach users what bird sounds they’re likely to experience during their stay above the treetops.
Blackbox-AV have been wonderful in supporting us with any queries as we worked through getting the devices set up for the public to enjoy and we are looking forward to many years of trouble-free use with this one too.
