U-Turns used Worldwide
From our factory in Port Talbot, Wales – we ship our signature outdoor audio device (the wind-up powered U-Turn Round) to clients across the globe. In this post we’ll be looking at some of the places you can find them!
You are here
UK
The (old) Ford Transit Factory, Southampton
Let’s get the obvious place out of the way, as a company based in Wales you can bet our products are used throughout the UK. This is an example of the U-Turn Round used in the old Ford Transit Factory in Southampton which was shut after 40 years of producing the popular Transit van.
During refurbishment of the land, part of the original site was set aside for a functional public art installation. At each end of the space you’ll find a U-Turn Round, loaded onto these outdoor audio units are clips from oral histories that were recorded before the factory was shut, which alongside additional signage helps to inform visitors of the now gone factory which played such a pivotal role to the local community.
Broads National Park, Norfolk
This is a recent example of the Oversized U-Turn Round which plays audio of wildlife you’ll find around Broads National Park. It’s been installed inside an old telephone box (initially bought for only £1!) which was refurbished into what’s jokingly referred to as “the smallest National Park information centre in the world”.
Curraghs Wildlife Park, Isle of Man
The U-Turn provides interpretive audio to outdoor locations without the need of mains power perfect for locations like Curraghs Wildlife Park in the Isle of Man, where you’ll find examples of both the standard U-Turn Round and Oversized option put to great use.
Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, Aberystwyth
A key attraction in Bwlch Nant yr Arian near Aberystwyth is the Elenydd Trail, which combines poetry, sculpture and storytelling to share Welsh myths, legends and folktales that bring the landscape to life. A series of sculptures situated on the trail have Oversized U-Turn Rounds built in, sharing the voice of “Elenydd” who represents the landscape and recounts some of the folktales that are known around the area.
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London
The 2012 London Olympics were a huge success, however with a reported cost of close to £9 billion the infrastructure created for the events was designed to last long after the closing ceremony concluded.
As part of the ongoing plans an audio interpretation trail around specific areas of the park was designed, sharing various forms of audio content with visitors along the way. The U-Turn Round was chosen to fulfil the role as outdoor audio device for said trail due to its proven track record working in harsh weather conditions as well as being incredibly resilient to vandalism. Four U-Turns were used in total and installed via plinths bolted into the ground.

Roma Big Rig
The Roma Big Rig mining heritage site recently added a 40m Tower and Treewalk to their list of attractions. To enhance the Tower and Treewalk, interpretive displays were installed at various vantage points. Xzibit, who designed and supplied the displays, selected the U-Turn Round to be deployed on the Treewalk where visitors might encounter signature local wildlife. Visitors can now acoustically identify the creatures thanks to the self-powered outdoor audio unit and accompanying signage.
City of Prospect, Adelaide
Interpretation specialists Armsign were commissioned by the City of Prospect council to add an “element relating to bird life” in an updated children’s garden. Armsign utilised a standard U-Turn Round Audio Box but created the colourful effect by using their own Armsign full colour Polycure Print on the front, and a custom paint job on the post. The result is a striking and hugely effective outdoor audio point.
Alice Springs
Armsign were also commissioned by the town of Alice Springs to create an always-open visitor centre. The U-Turn is installed on a post that extends from a map of the area with red styling is in keeping with the local tourism schemes ‘Red Centre NT’ branding which allows it to stand out as a point of interest to those embarking on a Red Centre adventure.
