Unique Outdoor Experience – The Keepers Quest
The Keepers Quest
For this months newsletter we thought we’d tell you about a unique interactive audio experience we worked on for Bryngarw Country Park. Watch the video to have the wonderful Ranger Daniel Lock give you the rundown! In short – the aim was to reconnect people with the natural landscape, bringing the story of the parks ecosystem to life in an imaginative, innovative, authentic and engaging way.
Awaken the Story…
The story of Bryngarw Park is brought to life through The Keepers, these larger than life sculptures (created from oak trees the fell during a storm at the Park the previous year) represent different aspects of the landscape – the Woodland, Meadow, Garden and River.
Each Keeper contains a lost story which can be awoken using a special star talisman available from the visitor centre. Visitors take the talisman (and a very handy map!) and head out to find each keeper – inserting the Star Talisman in different ways will activate a new story with both an English or Welsh Talisman available. The ‘hands on’ approach of this innovative technology was deliberately chosen over other options such as an app. It was determined that having visitors staring into digital screens would distract & detract from the chief purpose of the project – to facilitate an experience and deeper appreciation of the natural landscape itself.
Huge Success
The Keepers Quest has been such a huge success that a second phase was officially launched with a further 10 Keepers located at nature reserves and Green Spaces across Bridgend County. Contact us to discuss a similar project or if you feel like getting creative check out our off-the-shelf range of outdoor audio products and develop a similar experience at your own site.
Comments
Taking visitor interpretation to a new level, the interactive project is not only unique to Bridgend County Borough, but to the whole of Wales – Councillor Phil White Bridgend County Borough Council
Brilliant walk – great ideas for the little ones. Good way of getting people to experience the ‘less seen’ areas of the park. Jacob’s (age 7) favourite was the Keeper of the Meadow which he found last. Thanks for a great adventure! – Jan & Jacob Cooper
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our eldest daughter – nearly 8 – loved the search for all the Keepers. The meadow was a highlight where we sat and listened to the music twice! A lovely, different day out! – Richard, Tonya, Alys and Mabli Jones
